Secretary Vilsack met with Chinese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Tang Renjian to address outstanding market access issues and other U.S. agricultural stakeholder concerns,

USDA today hosted a high-level Food Security Dialogue with the Philippines Department of Agriculture that showcased critical bilateral efforts to address global food security and climate change.

With research and development funds provided by the FAS Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops Program, FAS and ARS are working to produce compostable PLU labels. They are collaborating with the International Fresh Produce Association and Sinclair Systems International to meet the EU standards. The goal is to develop adhesives that are both food-safe and compostable. When achieved, this will allow American companies to export fruits and vegetables as usual while helping to decrease food waste and methane emissions.

Secretary Vilsack and EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski traveled to a family farm in Maryland so the Commissioner could learn more about U.S. agriculture and its commitment to climate-smart, sustainable production.

In the year since it launched, the Global Methane Pledge has generated unprecedented momentum for methane action.

Deputy Secretary Jewel Bronaugh traveled to Bali Sept. 27-29 to attend the G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting, making the case for joint action on food security, climate, agricultural innovation, sustainable productivity growth, and closer global integration through trade.

USDA will invest $178 million in seven international development projects on four continents to support U.S. government priorities including promoting climate-smart agriculture, facilitating trade and addressing the root causes of migration in Central America.

FAS is awarding $300,000 to six U.S. universities – including three minority-serving institutions – for research and educational partnerships focused on climate-smart agriculture in tropical countries.

The Global Fertilizer Challenge will support innovative research, demonstrations, and training to help countries with high fertilizer usage and loss adopt efficient nutrient management and alternative fertilizers and cropping systems.

Secretary Vilsack and Mexico Agriculture Secretary Victor Villalobos met this week to continue cooperation on shared priorities including open trade, science-based policy making, and sustainable and climate-smart agricultural production.
