Japan: Health Ministry Proposes Draft Genome Edited Food Policy

On December 5, 2018, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) held its fourth public discussion on the handling of food products derived from genome editing technology. The “Research Sub-Committee for Genetically Modified Food” (the Sub-Committee) reviewed previous discussions and proposed a general policy for the handling of genome edited foods. MHLW is expected to establish a domestic public comment period in the near future.

Venezuela: Livestock and Products Annual

Since 2014, Venezuela’s total meat consumption has declined 57 percent due to prolonged economic downfall. Nevertheless, since 2019, an improved economic environment has led to stabilized beef production and significant growth in the poultry sector. In 2024, total per capita meat consumption is forecast to be 32.4 kilograms, growing 83 percent from its 2018 record low.
