Today, USDA Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Alexis Taylor launched an agribusiness trade mission to Japan.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) that the United States has requested dispute settlement consultations with Mexico under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). These consultations are in regard to Mexico’s agricultural biotechnology policies.

United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today announced that the United States has requested dispute settlement consultations with Mexico under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
USDA Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Alexis Taylor will lead the upcoming agricultural trade mission to Japan, June 5-8. The delegation includes a robust representation of the U.S. agriculture sector.

Helping Reduce Methane Emissions by Solving a Sticky Problem for U.S. Produce Exporters
With research and development funds provided by the FAS Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops Program, FAS and ARS are working to produce compostable PLU labels. They are collaborating with the International Fresh Produce Association and Sinclair Systems International to meet the EU standards. The goal is to develop adhesives that are both food-safe and compostable. When achieved, this will allow American companies to export fruits and vegetables as usual while helping to decrease food waste and methane emissions.

Export Sales to Mexico and Unknown Destinations
Private exporters reported the following sales activity: 150,000 MT of corn for delivery to Mexico during MY 2023/2024 and 20,000 MT of soybean oil for delivery to unknown destinations during MY 2022/2023.
Japan ’s new biofuels policy will help promote a cleaner, more sustainable energy future and will expand U.S. ethanol producers’ producers’ access to the Japanese market.

Taylor and a delegation of representatives from agribusiness and farm organizations and state departments of agriculture look to develop stronger ties and build economic partnerships between the United States and Panama and markets throughout CAFTA-DR region.

Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Under Secretary to Lead Trade Mission to Panama
