New Zealand: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

There have been no recent significant official changes to the heavily regulated and cautious policies put in place by the Government of New Zealand (GONZ) for genetically engineered (GE) products. Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the regulatory authority for approving the sale of GE food products in New Zealand, has approved 71 GE food products to date. These food products may be for either direct human consumption or for animal feed. All GE foods sold in New Zealand must be labeled. Animal feed and meat from animals that have been fed GE feed do not need to be labeled.
