Hosting a Borlaug Fellow FAQ

How can my U.S. university/institution host a Borlaug Fellow?

A partner institution should be a public or private agricultural research institution with experience implementing international training and collaborative research programs.  The host institution must also have adequate administrative capacity for Program logistics, (e.g., visa applications and clearance, airline tickets, housing, payment of living allowances, etc.). Host institutions will be chosen based on availability of suitable mentors in the fields of study of the successful candidates.

What kinds of housing accommodations are required for fellows?

Hosts have flexibility in choosing housing accommodations for fellows.  Fellows are permitted to reside in campus housing, short term corporate housing, and hotels; however, it is preferable they have cooking facilities in the residence and access to public transportation.  Host institutions should take into account gender and cultural norms, and accommodations must be safe and clean.  In general, housing should be within walking distance to the university campus/training location or easily accessible by public transportation.  Basic necessities, such as sheets, towels and cleaning supplies (if not already provided), should be provided for the Fellow’s use during their stay.

Can we purchase additional equipment and supplies for Fellows?

Additional equipment and supplies may be purchased for the Fellow by prioritizing expenses within the established budget.  If procurement of additional items are expected to cause the institution to exceed the budget, prior authorization must be received by the Borlaug Fellowship Program Leader.

Can we extend the length of training after the Fellow has arrived?

In some circumstances, fellowships may be extended for fellows to complete research at the request of the host institution. Extension requests should be communicated to Borlaug Fellowship Program staff in advance.

Can a Fellow be sent back to his/her home country before completing the program?

Yes.  Fellows are expected to participate fully in all scheduled assignments and abide by university codes of conduct.  If a Fellow fails to uphold their commitment to the established work plan or breaks the code of conduct, the fellowship can be terminated.  Any problems should be should be communicated to Borlaug Fellowship Program staff as soon as possible.

Can a Fellowship cover a university research assistant?

The fellowships are intended to provide opportunities to developing and middle-income citizens who would not otherwise have a learning opportunity outside of their home country. Students already on university assistantships would not fall into this category.
